The Berkeley Institute is an interdisciplinary initiative to expand Jewish and Israel Studies offerings launched in January 2011 by 15 members of the faculties of Economics, Comparative Literature, History, Jewish Studies, Music, Political Science, and Sociology, as well as the Law and Business Schools.
The Institutes' two initiatives – its Jewish Law Program and its Israeli Law, Economy and Society (ILES) Program – both serve undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty, through academic support, curricular development, and public programming. The ILES Program is the first institution on the Berkeley campus dedicated to the study of Israel.
In 2011-2012, its first full year, the Institute is coordinating six undergraduate courses and one graduate course across six university departments; hosting five visiting faculty and scholars; coordinating speaker series and conferences in Jewish Law and Thought, and in Israel Studies; and supporting both student and faculty research.
